The A74 (M) is a motorway in Scotland and a small part of Cumbria that links the M6 near Gretna (Dumfries and Galloway) and Longtown (Cumbria) to the M74 near Abington. It is 45 miles (72 kilometres) long.
The A74 (M) used to be a single carriageway trunk road called the A74, and then in the early 1970s, most of the road was rebuilt as dual carriageway, but this became obsolete by the early 1990s, and by 1999, the A74 (M) as we know it, was fully constructed.
The A74 (M), along with the M74 was originally going to be a continuation of the M6, meaning that it would start from Catthorpe near Rugby and end in Tradeston, Glasgow but the Scottish motorway standard was completed a lot earlier than the English M6 link to just north of Carlisle, so the Scottish Government decided to scrap the idea of the M6 and therefore, it brought the A74 (M) and the M74 motorways we know and love as of today.
