The M56 is a motorway that runs from Manchester to Chester. It starts at the M60 and finishes at the A5117 in Chester.

The motorway was opened in sections over ten years. Construction started in 1968, and the first stretch of road to open was Junctions 11 to 14 in 1971. The last section of motorway was opened in 1981.
