The M6 is a motorway that goes from Rugby to just north of Carlisle.
The M6 is the longest motorway in the United Kingdom, spanning 232.2 miles (373.7 kilometres) and part of it is the oldest motorway in the United Kingdom.
History[]
The M6 motorway started out as the Preston Bypass, opening in 1958. The second phase of the motorway was completed in 1960, making the Lancaster Bypass. About 100 miles (160 kilometres) south from where they were building all this motorway, the Stafford Bypass was completed in 1962, and by 1965, the bypasses were all linked up with each other. In 1966, junction 11-13 was built and completed, and two years later in 1968, the lik between Walsall and Stafford was completed as well as the Penrith Bypass 150 miles north of this in Cumberland (now part of a larger county called Cumbria). By 1970, the link between Lancaster and Penrith as completed, as well, as a short part of motorway bypassing the south of Walsall. The most northern part of the motorway opened in 1970, going to the current terminus at the north of Carlisle. By the year of 1971, the whole M6 was completed linking it with the M1 at Rugby and the A38 (A38(M)). Junction 6 opened in 1972, known as Spaghetti Junction. Once everything was linked up, you had 232.2 miles (373.7 kilometres) of uninterrupted motorway.
