Motorways are large, grade separated roads, complete with hard shoulders and central reservations. Motorways are differentiated from 'A' road dual carriageways mainly by the provision of hard shoulders and restrictions which prohibit slow moving traffic and pedestrians. All Motorways are designated with blue backed signs and 'M' prefixes.
History[]
The first motorway to be opened in the United Kingdom was the Preston Bypass in 1958, which is now part of the M6. It was shortly followed by the M1 in 1959.
